The First Methodist Preaching in West Chester

The first Methodist preaching in West Chester was by Rev. Wm. Hunter, Feb 1840, in the old court-house.  (Hunter this year was presiding elder on the Schuylkill District).  He died in Coventry, Chester co., Pa, Sept 27, 1833).  The first class was formed in 1815; supplied with preaching from the Chester Circuit.  The first church was built in 1816, on Gay Street east of Darlington.  A new church was erected in 1840-42 corner of Market and Darlington, present site.  This building was remodeled under the pastorate of Rev. John B.McCullough, at an expense of $8,000.
